Trip Notes

DAY 1: TOKYO

Konnichiwa! Welcome to Japan!

With our group being made up of people from all around the world, we don’t have any activities planned for day 1 except for a group meeting at 6pm!

Our tour leader will take us four a little walk around the Shinjuku area, and we can eat together as a group for the first time!

Tokyo is modern, dynamic, and a thriving city in the wake of ancient history. You’ll see the constant contradictions: high-tech gadgets play a huge role in Japanese life, yet this is a society that is also very traditional. Three days might not be enough in Tokyo, so we might suggest that you come a little early to take in some more sights yourself!

As a side note: We will never run out of things to do in Tokyo, so we have given you a little list of some optional activities that you might want to take advantage of! Please note that we have given you the approximate prices for the tours, and that they may vary due to the season. Our days in Tokyo won’t involve a lot of interference from our tour guide so go forth and conquer your limited Japanese! :D

Today is another free day for you to explore this mega-tropolis!

Seriously, there is so much to see around Tokyo! Go east if you want to see the districts of Shibuya and Harajuku (known really well around the world!). Of course you have to go marvel at the Meiji Jingu Shrine and the Sensoji Temple: a calm and cool way to pass through the afternoon. Tokyo has a lot of little unexpected historic temples and shrines, so even if you want to get lost in Tokyo… well, that wouldn’t be the worst!

Cat lovers rejoice: head to the Gotokuji Cat Temple! The beckoning cats (or Maneki Neko) are known for good luck and prosperity all throughout Asia! If you like, you can also spend the day at Tokyo Disney or Disney Sea. Otherwise you can also consider going to a three hour robot show at the Robot Café in Shinjuku! No lies! Neon lights lasers, robotics, video screens and dancers will wow you!

After dropping off our stuff at the hotel, we’ll go for a little walk around the castle and gardens. The castle is free to enter, but the Gardens have an additional fee of 310JPY.

Maybe you can visit the Kinkaku-ji Temple (gold plated, please thank you!), or the Nijo Castle. Make sure you walk through the famous Gion Geisha district. Here you will also find tea-houses a-plenty (made famous fro the movie Memoirs of a Geisha). If you want to go visit the Himeji Castle in Nikko, you could also do that today! If you want our recommendation… Go up to the wooded hills of Inari Mountain for a walk, and check out the Shinto ‘fox temple’. There are some pretty neat tunnels of red torji, so if you’re a keen photographer… well, you won’t run out of cool angles to try!

Osaka is known as Japan’s unofficial culinary capital- it has huge shopping hubs but then small backstreets overflow with restaurants and bars serving up amazing local foods. Osaka is also known for hosting the first conveyer belt sushi restaurant!

If you’ve got some time, why not go over to Osaka Castle or enjoy a walking tour around the Dotombori district (it’s famous for the shopping and the foo!). At night you’ll find the neon lights shining brightly just for you!

If you love a bit of adventure, head over to the Universal Studios theme park, or if you prefer learning a new skill like drumming, head over to a Taiko Drum Lesson. If none of this sounds good, maybe we can tempt you with a cheeky Spa World trip?? (Just FYI, you will have to be naked!)

For those ready to shop until you drop, it’s a good idea to head over to the Kuromon covered market, or otherwise head over to the Dogusuji Arcade for some sweet Japanese gadgets!
