DAY 1: NEGOMBO
Welcome to Sri Lanka! We don’t have any activities planned for today, so arrive at any time before 6pm. We’ll have a welcome meeting with our tour leader (also to collect insurance and emergency contact details so have them handy!).
Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka, and also the biggest city, but we won’t be staying there- why stay in a bustling city when we can be staying by the beach not far from it?
DAY 2: KANDY
We start our day off at the fish market in Negombo- it can be really intense, but hey, what’s a better way to introduce you to the ways of the Sri Lankans! Then, we head in a private vehicle over to Kandy. We visit a spice garden on the way too, so get those taste buds going! It’s going to take about three hours to get to Kandy. Once we arrive, you can opt to visit the Temple of the Tooth (otherwise known as Dalada Maligawa), which happens to be the most important shrine in the whole of the country. We would also recommend attending a cultural show while here. You’ll be totally awe-inspired by Kandyan dances!
Other than that, you can go for a scroll around the Royal Botanical Garden just ten minutes away! We even have access to the swimming pool of the hotel next door- massive bonus!
DAY 3: KANDY
We have a whole day today to explore Kandy- if you missed something yesterday, there is no time like the present to make up for it!
You can also get your tour leader to help you organise a day trip over to the famous palace of Sigiriya, or maybe explore the amazing cave complex of Dambulla Caves temple. This World Heritage listed monastery has been a pilgrimage site for over twenty two centuries for a reason!
In the afternoon, why not try an Ayurvedic massage to try out something different?
DAY 4: ELLA
Today, we get on a train for about 6 hours to get to Ella. Our hotel is walking distance from the train station so we’ll check straight in on arrival, and we’ll go out to visit a local tea factory! Otherwise, there are loads of lovely local restaurants and bars to take in some more of this fantastic cuisine.
DAY 5: ELLA
There’s an included half-day trek this morning that we will take part in, and lunch is provided in a local village! This is really one of the best ways to get to know the area and get a feel of the local communities. Take the rest of the day off- a dive in the pool, a nice little restaurant for dinner, perhaps!
DAY 6: YALA NATIONAL PARK
Ohh have we got something in store for you today! We leave Ella and take a three hour trip to a camp site in Yala National Park! YAAAA!! Once we’ve got our stuff into tents, we’ll go on a jeep safari to get closer to the wildlife in the area- see how many elephants, leopards and aquatic birds we will find! This is truly an amazing experience! Tonight, we will try and count as many shooting stars as possible!
A side note: : Accommodation is quad share in large fixed tents. Bathrooms and showers are shared facilities.
- Yala National Park Jeep Safari
DAY 7: UNAWATUNA
Today, we head west for about three and a half hours to Unawatuna. This is a beautiful stretch of beach, with plenty of restaurants and pubs to choose from and see which one takes your fancy! We don’t have anything planned for today so go out and exploreth!
DAY 8-9: UNAWATUNA
Phwoa! Life just does not get better than this! Take these two days to relax on the beach. If you want, you can take the optional whale watching tour, or maybe take a day trip out to visit the Galle Royal Dutch Fort. We’ll be staying at a guest house right on the beach, so … need we say more??!
- Breakfast both days
DAY 10: COLOMBO
Today we leave this beautiful piece of coast behind, because we head back to Colombo today! The train journey from Galle will take about four hours. As soon as we do arrive, you can choose to join our tour leader for a bit of a walking tour. Or get that last minute shopping in! The night is free, but you might want to take part in a final group dinner for our last farewell!
DAY 11: COLOMBO
Aww! We have to say goodbye today! There are no activities planned for today, so you can choose to leave at any time.
