I mean, there’s a few hundred steps to climb (ew), but if you’re the adventurous kind, your hard work will be well rewarded with fantastic views! If you’re a bit more mellow, try a traditional Thai massage, or if you’ve got an eye for cooking, try a cooking class! At night, there’s a great bazaar for you to try different foods and also of course, get some amazing pressies for friends and family back home!

Huay Xai is actually a gorgeous little town, and we recommend you use the free time to just take in your surroundings and have a relax. If you prefer to stay active, then maybe go do some climbing of stairs to Wat Jom Khao Manilat, or visit a village nearby where they make *gasp rice whiskey, noodles, and handicrafts (your leader will know all about this!).

None today.

DAY 5: PAKBENG

Today we’re going to board a slow boat down the Mekong River (which will take about 7 hours). You can now chill out now and get in to holiday mode! Pull out a book or some playing cards. We arrive in Pakbeng late this afternoon, so take the time for a bit of a wander around the village! In Laotian, ‘nam’ means ‘river’, so don’t go around saying Nam Beng River because then you’re saying river too many times!

Make sure you explore the caves that are along the West Bank, because it’s pretty much unmissable. Later, you can also take part in optional kayaking along the Nam Song!

A side note: The mountain scenery to Vang Vieng is pretty astounding, but obviously the catch is that it’s a rather winding road, so do make sure you bring some medication if you’e prone to travel sickness.

  • Khamphone Guesthouse or similar (1 night)

Meals Included

None today.

DAY 10: VANG VIENG

Today, check out the caves, lagoons, and forests as you like! There are so many outdoor activities here, really, you won’t be stuck for things to do! Ask your tour leader for tips! This morning, we take a four hour bus ride to make it there. On arrival, we’ll make sure you visit Wat Si Saket (one of the oldest and most beautiful temples!), and then you have some free time to take in the last bits of Laos.
